Teddy Boy (also known as Ted) is a British subculture typified by young men wearing clothes that were partly inspired by the styles worn by dandies in the Edwardian period, which Savile Row tailors had attempted to re-introduce in Britain after World War II.Today our customer John, came in for his first fitting & has been wearing the Teddy Boy style for the last 50 years and still rocks the look today .The wide pinstripe cloth he has chosen is inspired by the suits he used to wear back in the day!
John said :
" The first one I had made cost me £15!
I Started wearing them in the 1960s and I could go and get them made anywhere, but as time went on in the late 60s, early 70s all of the tailors packed up because styles were changing and people weren't wearing as many suits anymore - so I stopped having them made .
An old tailors shop used to be where the Salvation Army shop is now in Wellingborough and that's where I used to get my suits made . Around Wellingborough there were quite a lot of tailors to choose from !
I've always liked teddy boy suits because to me they look really smart . Years ago I used to get shouted abuse at from the older people because they used to say I looked scruffy ! They used to shout yobbo !
My dad even used to say u aren't coming out with me wearing that ! There were six of us from my village who used to go around together wearing teddy boy suits .
All the teddy boys all used to hang out in a coffee shop called the blue bowl on Cambridge street .we all used to wear thin knitted ties with either a black or white shirt .
The old teddy boy suits trousers were so slim at the ankles that they used to be made with a hidden zip at the bottom so that they could go over your feet !
A trend now that modern fashion has now adopted.
My favourite suit I had made was a black and white dog tooth with a velvet belt on the back and velvet on the cuffs and collar . I always had mine made a little longer than usual . Of course we all had side burns, and I still do ! "
Johns been a customer of ours for years now , I've made him several garments . Look out for him around town !
